Walking Ghost Tour

One night I decided to try out some sort of ghost tour, since Savannah is considered one of the most haunted places in the United States. What I very quickly found it is that there are a lot of ghost tour companies in Savannah. There’s a ghost trolley tour, several historic buildings that people and take tours of, but I found that there are more walking tours than anything else. So, I decided to try one of the walking tours.

One of the ghost trolley tours

The walking tour I experienced was a two hour that lasted from 9:30 to 11:30pm. My tour guide was someone who was very clearly not a stranger to theatre, as the way he spoke about all of the haunting stories was extremely dramatic- but, very well done.

We walked all throughout the Historic District, around most of the squares and some churches. He educated the group about why Savannah was considered to be so haunted- it is built on top of a giant, civil war battle and burial ground. This haunted me. He explained the story of the apparition in Wright Square, which apparently was where the woman asking “have you seen my baby?” was hung immediately after giving birth. Our tour guide explained that there is a lack of Spanish moss in Wright Square, specifically the area where the woman was hung, because it is believed that moss does not grow where the dead lurk.

I found the whole experience super interesting. And while I like to think I believe in the supernatural, specifically ghosts, I felt a bit skeptical during most of his stories.
