Reactions to Savannah

My first reaction to the environment was quite simple- it’s HOT. Despite Savannah being a town located on the river, it’s located in the Georgia swamp, and it’s humidity is exhausting. The drive from the airport to the actual city was nothing special- we passed a Target and an outlet mall and some other shopping centers. It looked like anywhere else in the United States. When we actually reached the city, I found it incredibly charming. It’s a very boutique-y, “shop and eat local” sort of town, sprinkled with a couple of chains here and there such as a McDonald’s and a few Banana Republic-type shops.

An original painting found in Savannah’s City Market

I quickly found how much Savannah cherishes not only small businesses, but art as well. There were many shops along River Street- the city’s waterfront- as well as the City Market, which contained original artworks by local artists. I also found that the overall town is very open and friendly. It’s a very social town, where introverts (ME), are encouraged to loosen up and connect with others. In many shop windows, pride flags were hung, noting people’s general acceptance of every lifestyle; which, in all honesty, was something I did not expect to see in the South.

Savannah is a unique city in the way that it is laid out. It seems to have been built on a sort of grid system, so it is very easy to navigate, especially for tourists. There are an enormous amount of squares that divide the streets, which is another thing that makes this place so unique.
