River Street

Brief video highlighting River Street

River Street is the name given to Savannah’s waterfront, which has pretty much the same deal as the City Market- lots of shops, lots of places to eat, more historical sites. River Street is considered a little more touristy than the rest of Savannah, as you’ll find a lot more souvenir shops with tacky t-shirts, personalized mugs, and things of that nature. Where City Market has a wider variety of restaurants and types of food, you’ll find one thing about the restaurants along River Street- they’re all seafood restaurants. But, then again, when you’re on the water, that’s probably the most acceptable type of restaurant to have several of.

Though it is waterfront, it does not sit on the ocean- if you can tell by the name, it sits on the river. One of the most interesting things about the river is that it is heavily trafficked by massive cargo ships. I remember one day I was eating at one of the (several) seafood restaurants, and I looked up and practically only saw a wall of shipping containers. At first it was kind of terrifying, because it was so close to the dock! As it turns out, those come and go several times a day, ranging in all different sizes. It’s one of those things where whenever one comes through, everyone on River Street stops and watches it go by. It’s kind of amazing.

River Street also does contain a big market of original art pieces. It’s kind of like a flea market, where different vendors sell their art, some sell absolute crap. That market is probably one of my favorites about River Street. There’s also a store that only sells Christmas decorations. However, I wouldn’t allow myself to really enjoy that when it’s the middle of July.
