I know that I mentioned this in my “reactions to savannah” video, but it seemed to be such a big part of my experience in Savannah. The complete lack of open container laws regarding alcohol baffled me, and continues to baffle me. One of the most fun things was being able to go to a restaurant to order food and some wine or a margarita (this was a recurring theme throughout my trip), and if it ever got to the point of leaving and I wasn’t finished drinking, I wasn’t forced to hurry and slurp it all down, or break my own heart by throwing it out. Instead, I had many exchanges that went like this:
“Can I get a to-go cup?”
“Absolutely!”
The first time it happened, or rather I was made aware of this, it was quite confusing to me. “You mean I can just take it?” is something I would ask my mom before actually getting the courage to just do it.

I truly think this is part of what makes Savannah such a social town. And it really is very safe, you don’t need to drive anywhere because it’s absurdly walkable, which is why I think these laws do not exist. There are some shops and stores that ask you to not bring a drink in, purely for the fear of it getting spilled, but this whole concept merely adds to the narrative of Savannah being such an open, social, and accepting place to live.
